German Chocolate Cake

1 pkg. (4oz.) Baker's German sweet chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites

Melt chocolate in boiling water, cool.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each.
Add chocolate and vanilla.
Sift together dry ingredients.
Add alternately with the buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition.
Beat until batter is smooth. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, fold into batter.
Grease and flour cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees, 20- 40 minutes. Cool (Makes 3 round layers).

  1. I made this for Dad's birthday and it took FOREVER to make, but was very good. It probably wouldn't take as long the next time around. The batter was especially amazing, so light and fluffy (taste it!).
